How to get rid of eye bags: what works
Every realistic option, from cold spoons to surgery — how well it works, the effort and the cost. Tap a row for details.
Cold compressMorning puffinessGood, short-livedEffort LowCost Free
What's good: Free, gentle, works for almost everyone. Cold narrows blood vessels and helps fluid move on.
Good to know: Effect lasts hours, not days. Never put ice straight on the skin. A cold flannel, chilled spoons or cold water all work.
Sleep & salt habitsFluid, tirednessGood for fluidEffort MediumCost Free
What's good: A raised pillow, seven to nine hours and less late salt and alcohol tackle the cause of fluid puffiness, not just the look.
Good to know: Won't change genetic or age-related bags. Needs a few days of consistency.
Cooling eye patchesFluid, tiredness, big daysGood, temporaryEffort LowCost ££
What's good: Cooling hydrogel plus hydrating ingredients such as caffeine, peptides or PDRN give a visibly de-puffed, fresher look in about twenty minutes.
Good to know: Temporary — the look fades and needs repeating a few times a week.
Eye creamAgeing, crepey skinSubtle, builds over weeksEffort LowCost ££
What's good: Hydrates and, with peptides or niacinamide, supports the look of firmer, smoother skin with regular use.
Good to know: Cannot move fat pads or change structure. Patch-test if you have sensitive eyes.
Allergy careItchy, watery, swollen eyesVery good for allergiesEffort LowCost £
What's good: Antihistamines, allergy eye drops and avoiding triggers deal with the actual cause. Any UK pharmacist can help without an appointment.
Good to know: Ask the pharmacist which product suits you, especially if you take other medicines.
See a GPSudden, one-sided or painful swellingEssential for warning signsEffort LowCost Free
What's good: Rules out infection, thyroid or kidney problems and other causes that need medical care. An optician or NHS 111 can help too.
Good to know: Go urgently if your vision changes or the eye is red and painful.
Cosmetic surgeryGenetic and age-related bagsThe only structural fixEffort HighCost £££
What's good: Lower-lid blepharoplasty removes or repositions under-eye fat, and results can last many years. Fillers and laser are also used.
Good to know: Usually not NHS-funded and costs several thousand pounds privately. Real surgery with real risks and weeks of recovery — choose a GMC-registered specialist.

- Eye bags & ageingLooser support and thinner skin — bags that show all day.

How to get rid of eye bags: a simple plan
What helps depends on the cause, and most people have a mix — say, inherited bags that look bigger after a salty dinner. This order works for almost everyone because it starts with the cheapest, safest steps.
1. Tonight: cut the fluid
Have your last salty meal and last drink earlier in the evening, drink a glass of water, and add a second pillow so your head sits slightly higher than your heart.
2. Tomorrow morning: go cold
Hold a cold flannel, two chilled teaspoons or cooling eye patches under your eyes for five to twenty minutes. Pat — don't rub — any eye product in with your ring finger.
3. This month: a routine that fits your cause
For fluid and tiredness, cooling patches a few mornings a week plus better sleep make the biggest visible difference. For ageing and genetics, a daily eye cream, SPF and sunglasses help the skin look smoother and firmer. For allergies, it's antihistamines and avoiding triggers first.
4. Still bothering you? Get proper advice
If your bags are structural and really affect your confidence, a private consultation with an oculoplastic or plastic surgeon explains surgery or fillers, including risks and recovery.
Eye patches or eye cream?
Eye patches are a twenty-minute step for morning puffiness and big days. Eye creams are a daily habit that keeps the skin hydrated and, with peptides or niacinamide, supports the look of firmer, smoother skin over weeks. They work best together: the cream as the daily base, patches on the mornings it shows. The free options are in our home remedies guide.
When to see a GP about puffy eyes
Get swelling around the eyes checked if it comes on suddenly, affects only one eye, hurts, keeps getting worse, or comes with changes in your vision, redness, fever or swelling elsewhere, such as your ankles. A pharmacist or optician is a good first stop for mild symptoms; call NHS 111 or see a GP for anything that worries you, and go to A&E if your eye is very painful or your sight changes suddenly.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get rid of bags under my eyes quickly?
For a quick fix, cold is your friend. Hold a cold flannel, chilled spoons or cooling hydrogel patches under your eyes for five to twenty minutes; this can make morning puffiness look visibly smaller within the hour. Sleeping with your head slightly raised and cutting back on late salty food and alcohol helps the next morning too. None of these are permanent — they reduce the look of puffiness for a while.
What causes bags under your eyes?
The five usual causes are fluid pooling overnight, tiredness and lifestyle (short sleep, salt, alcohol, screens), ageing (the tissue holding the fat around the eye loosens and the skin thins), genetics (inherited fat pads or bone structure) and allergies such as hay fever. Many people have a mix. Our free 2-minute eye bag test helps you work out which one is likely to be your main cause.
Are eye bags genetic?
Often, yes. If you have had noticeable bags since your teens or twenties and a parent or sibling has them too, you have probably inherited the shape of your fat pads, bone structure or skin. Genetic bags are very common and harmless. They do not disappear with more sleep or creams, although good skincare can make the skin on top look smoother and fresher.
Why do I have eye bags when I sleep well?
Sleep is only one factor. If your bags show even after a good night, the cause is more likely genetic or age-related, or fluid from salty food, alcohol or sleeping flat. Allergies can also cause puffiness regardless of sleep. Look at when they are worst: bags that look the same all day usually point to structure rather than tiredness.
Why are my eyes puffy in the morning?
When you lie flat for hours, fluid can collect in the thin, loose skin under your eyes. Once you are upright and moving, it slowly drains away, which is why puffiness is often worst on waking and better by lunchtime. A late salty meal, alcohol or crying the night before makes it more noticeable. Try an extra pillow and a cold compress.
Does salt cause puffy eyes?
Salt makes your body hold on to water, and some of that fluid can gather in the delicate skin around the eyes, especially overnight. A salty takeaway or crisps late in the evening is a classic cause of puffy eyes the next morning. Keeping salty food earlier in the day, drinking enough water and limiting alcohol all help keep morning puffiness down.
Can hay fever cause bags under eyes?
Yes. Hay fever and other allergies release histamine, which can make the eyelids swell and feel itchy and watery. Rubbing makes it worse and can leave dark “allergic shiners”. If your puffiness comes with itching in spring or summer, or around pets or dust, speak to a pharmacist about antihistamines or allergy eye drops before trying any beauty product.
Do eye creams really work for bags?
Eye creams can help the look of eye bags, but only to a point. Ingredients like caffeine, peptides and hydrating agents can make skin look smoother, firmer and less puffy for a while. They cannot remove fat that has moved forward or change your bone structure, so they work best for fluid-related puffiness and tired-looking skin, and give subtler results for genetic or age-related bags.
Can eye bags go away on their own?
Puffiness from a late night, a salty meal, a cold or hay fever usually settles on its own within hours or days once the trigger passes. Bags caused by ageing or genetics are structural, so they tend to stay and may slowly become more noticeable. Swelling that is new, one-sided or getting worse should be checked by a GP or optician.
Is eye bag removal available on the NHS?
Usually not. Cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to improve appearance is not normally funded by the NHS. It may be considered if drooping upper eyelids affect your vision. Most people in the UK pay privately, typically several thousand pounds. Choose a surgeon on the GMC specialist register and a clinic registered with the Care Quality Commission, and ask about risks and recovery.
