What causes bags under eyes? Pick your cause
Five usual causes, and each needs a different approach. Pick the one that sounds most like you.
- Puffy eyes in the morningFluid that pools overnight — worst on waking, better by lunch.
- Tired eyes & lifestyleShort sleep, screens, salt and alcohol — the most changeable cause.
- Eye bags & ageingLooser support and thinner skin — bags that show all day.
- Genetic eye bagsHad them since your teens, and so do your parents.
- Allergy-related puffinessItchy, watery eyes and hay-fever season swelling.
How the causes differ at a glance
The quickest clue is timing. Fluid-related puffiness is worst in the morning and fades during the day. Lifestyle bags come and go with sleep, alcohol and stress. Age-related and genetic bags are structural, so they look much the same from morning to night and don't respond to a good night's sleep. Allergy-related puffiness comes with itching, watering or redness and often follows the seasons.
Many people have more than one cause — for example, an inherited bag that looks bigger after a salty dinner. Start with the cause that fits best, and use the tips from the others as extras. Whatever your cause, see a GP if swelling is sudden, painful, one-sided or comes with changes in your vision.
